Where you'll land: a mid-size family car getting a full service at a good independent garage in Dublin typically comes in around the €250–€300 mark. Under €200 usually means an interim rather than a full service — check what's actually included before comparing.

What's actually included

The tiers aren't standardised across the industry, which is precisely why quotes are hard to compare. Broadly:

Interim service — engine oil and oil filter change, plus a vehicle health check covering fluid levels, tyres, brakes, lights and battery. It's a top-up-and-inspect visit. Good for high-mileage drivers between full services.

Full service — everything in the interim, plus air filter and pollen filter replacement, spark plugs on petrol cars, coolant and brake fluid checked and topped up, battery and system diagnostics, a brake inspection and a service history stamp. This is the annual one most people need.

Major service — everything in a full service, plus items on longer replacement intervals: fuel filter, brake fluid change rather than top-up, and deeper inspection of gearbox, suspension and engine components. Timing belts are usually quoted separately because they're a big job in their own right.

The thing to ask: "Is that an interim or a full service, and what's on the list?" A €150 quote and a €280 quote are often two different jobs rather than two prices for the same job.

Protect yourself on price

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission's advice is worth following: get a quote that breaks down parts, labour and VAT before work starts.

Two more habits that save money:

• Ask to be contacted before any extra work. A good garage rings you when they find something. Authorise the service, not a blank cheque
• Ask for the old parts back, or at least to be shown them. Legitimate garages have no problem with this

The appeal here is predictability rather than personality. AA offers fixed-price interim, full and major servicing, so you know the number before you book, and all work carries a 12-month warranty on parts and labour.

Their full service covers a vehicle health check, engine oil and filter, air filter and pollen filter, coolant and brake fluid top-up, and battery and system diagnostics. The interim is oil, filter and health check.

AA members and AA insurance policyholders get up to 20% off full or interim servicing at the Dublin centre — a meaningful saving if you already hold a policy. Tyre fitting is complimentary for members.

Best for: anyone who wants a fixed price up front, and existing AA members.

5. DL Motorworks — if you drive a BMW or MINI

Main dealer or independent?

The honest answer depends on the car's age.

Under warranty: a dealer is the simpler route, though not a legal requirement. Under the EU Block Exemption Regulation, any competent garage can service your car without voiding the manufacturer's warranty, provided it follows the manufacturer's schedule, uses matching-quality parts and documents the work.

Out of warranty: a good independent will typically undercut the dealer meaningfully for the identical schedule, and the gap widens on larger jobs.

Either way, recalls and manufacturer software campaigns go through the dealer network, normally free of charge.

How to choose

Check for accreditation. SIMI membership, IMI accreditation or AA Approved status all mean somebody independent has looked at the business. Three of the five above hold at least one.

Ask about the warranty on work. Twelve months on parts and labour is the standard worth expecting.

Match the garage to the car. A ten-year-old Corolla and a three-year-old Audi with driver-assist systems have different needs. Diagnostic capability matters more than it used to.
