The thing nobody tells you about prices

Worth saying up front, because it will save you some frustration.

Several Cork garages publish pages at addresses like /car-service-prices/bmw/. We checked every one of them. None of them actually lists a price. They are marketing pages that end in a phone number.

That isn't dishonesty so much as how BMW servicing works — the cost depends on model, engine, age and which items the car's service computer has flagged. But it does mean there is no way to compare Cork garages on price without ringing three of them with your registration number to hand. Budget an afternoon of phone calls, or accept that you're choosing on reputation rather than cost.

As a rough benchmark, annual maintenance on a typical BMW in Ireland runs around €300 to €550, with larger engines, M cars and anything neglected sitting well above that. A competent independent will usually come in meaningfully under dealer pricing for the identical schedule.

Will an independent void your BMW warranty?

No. Under the EU Motor Vehicle Block Exemption Regulation, a manufacturer cannot tie its warranty to its own dealer network, and the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission enforces this in Ireland. Every independent on this list references it, and they are right to.

The conditions that actually matter:

• Work follows BMW's own service schedule
• Parts are of matching quality to the originals
• The service is properly documented

That last one separates the good independents from the rest. Ask specifically whether they update the online service record — the digital history in your car's iDrive and on BMW's servers. Two garages below explicitly say they do. It costs nothing to ask and it shows up later when you sell.

The honest caveat: warranty claims still go through the dealer. For a car in its first three years, Kearys is the path of least resistance. After that, the maths changes quickly.

They are SIMI accredited and an authorised Akrapovič dealer, and the model coverage is unusually complete: more than forty BMWs listed, from 1 Series through the M cars and X range to the full electric line-up — i3, i4, i7, i8, iX, iX1 and iX3. Plenty of independents quietly decline the electric ones.

Beyond servicing they handle advanced diagnostics and engine management, gearbox work, hybrid and EV servicing, and performance upgrades including ECU remapping and exhaust systems. They service to manufacturer specification with OE parts and lubricants, and update the online service records.

Wilton puts them handy for the south and west of the city.

That's rare in an independent and it's the reason they can offer things a general garage can't: individual component programming, software upgrades on any control module, factory retrofits, and electronic repairs.

They service to dealer standards too, so it isn't only a fault-finding shop.

Two practical notes. The web presence is minimal, so ring rather than expecting to book online. And they close at 6pm with no Saturday opening, which is tighter than most.

Best for: coding, retrofits, module programming, and the electrical faults other garages give up on.

3. Kearys BMW — Cork's authorised retailer

The only authorised BMW retailer in Cork, and the default answer if your car is still under warranty or on a service plan.

BMW-trained technicians, genuine BMW parts carrying a two-year warranty, and the manufacturer programmes you can only get inside the network: BMW Value Service for older cars, BMW Proactive Care, and Service Inclusive packages. You can book through the My BMW App or online.

Two details worth knowing. They run an NCT Concierge service, which takes the car to the test for you — genuinely useful if your working day doesn't allow it. And they advertise savings of up to 40% on genuine BMW parts when the car is serviced with them, which narrows the dealer-versus-independent gap more than people expect.

They are also open Saturdays until 5pm, which no independent on this list matches.

Best for: cars under warranty, recalls and software campaigns, service plans, and anyone who wants Saturday availability.

4. Ardfallen Motorcare — the most convenient

They also run 24-hour rescue and recovery.

The service list runs well past routine work — air conditioning, auto electrics, gearbox servicing, brakes, clutches, diagnostics, engine management, timing belts, steering and suspension, fleet maintenance and van repairs.

They are a strong general garage that does BMW properly, rather than a BMW obsessive's workshop. For most servicing that is exactly what you want.

Best for: straightforward servicing done well, with the best facilities and the easiest access of any garage here.

5. JP D'Arcy Mercedes & BMW Service — early doors, multi-brand

Open at 7am, which is the single most useful thing about them if you're dropping a car before work. Nothing else on this list opens before 8.30.

That is precisely the answer you want to the question in the section above.

Parts are OEM or manufacturer-approved and they work to Block Exemption compliance, so the warranty position holds.

Note the Friday hours — they close at 1pm, so don't plan a Friday afternoon collection.

What to ask before you book

"Do you update the online service record?" The single most valuable question. Des Golden and JP D'Arcy both say yes explicitly. It affects what the car is worth when you sell — as does the rest of the history a buyer can check.

"What diagnostics do you run?" "BMW diagnostics" can mean official ISTA or a generic code reader. KM Garage and JP D'Arcy both name ISTA specifically. On a modern BMW the difference is real.

"Can you quote me with the reg?" Since nobody publishes prices, give them the registration and get a figure before you commit. Any garage here will do that.

"Do you do the NCT prep?" Ardfallen includes it free; Kearys will take the car to the test for you. Worth knowing before you pay for a separate NCT appointment.

Is Kearys the only BMW dealer in Cork?
