NCT Cahir
Address, eircode and what to bring to the NCT test centre in Cahir, Co. Tipperary.
Booking a test at Cahir
Bookings for every NCT centre are made centrally through the National Car Testing Service, not with the centre directly. You choose Cahir as your location when booking.
Availability varies a lot between centres and times of year. If Cahir is booked out, it is worth checking the other centres listed further down this page — a slightly longer drive often beats waiting weeks.
What to bring
Three things, and you need all of them:
- Your Vehicle Registration Certificate (the logbook)
- Photo ID — a driving licence, passport or Public Services Card
- Your booking confirmation, printed or on your phone
The ID must belong to whoever brings the car, not the registered owner. If you send someone else, they bring their own licence.
Payment is by cash, debit card or credit card — not American Express.
Before you drive to Cahir
The NCTS may be unable to test your car if it is not properly prepared. The essentials:
- Empty the boot and clear out personal belongings
- Unlock and empty the glove compartment — the tester needs access for OBD testing
- Make all seat belts and clips visible, including the rear ones
- Remove hubcaps if they cover the wheel nuts, and check tyre pressures
- Wash the car, including the underbody
- Check oil and water levels
- Drive far enough that the engine is at normal operating temperature on arrival
Our full guide to what to bring to the NCT covers the complete official checklist and the items that most often catch people out.

| Full NCT test | €60 |
| Re-test requiring test equipment | €40 |

The test takes roughly 30 to 40 minutes. Allow about an hour in total including check-in and getting your result. Fees are set by the NCTS and can change — confirm when booking.
Other NCT centres in Co. Tipperary
If Cahir has no availability, these are your alternatives in the same county:
- NCT Nenagh — Lisbunny Industrial Estate, Dublin Road, Co. Tipperary, E45 AY62
If the car fails
You get a report listing every failed item. Fix them, keep the receipts, and return within 21 calendar days to the same centre if you want the free visual re-test or the reduced €40 rate.
Driving without a valid NCT carries a €60 fixed charge, rising to €90 after 28 days, plus 3 penalty points — and it can give an insurer grounds to dispute a claim. Check your motor tax is current while you are at it.
A pre-NCT check at a local garage is usually cheaper than a failed test plus a re-test. See our guides to car servicing in Dublin and Cork.
